‘Basketball Wives? Tanya Young Reveals the Show’s Dirtiest Secret

As a petition to boycott the reality series gains signatures, a former Basketball Wife reveals why the show is “sheer hell?for women of color.

My knowledge of the inner workings of Basketball Wives stems from my role as one, in the inaugural season of Basketball Wives LA. Though I was cautioned

against participating in the series, my intention was to change the perception that wives of basketball players are flighty, overly emotional, and senselessly dramatic. I wanted to show interesting aspects of my life and also bring attention to the National Domestic Violence Hotline, for which I am a celebrity spokesperson. But as the proverb goes, “the road to hell is paved with good intentions.?And working on Basketball Wives was sheer hell.

Within weeks of taping Basketball Wives LA, there was a horrific fight between two cast members while we dined at a swanky Santa Monica restaurant. They argued and eventually fought over who was a “rat?versus a “hoodrat,?who was sleeping with a married man, who was the real bitch, who was fat, and whose teeth were “jacked up.?It was a surreal moment. I was paralyzed by shock and anger. I sat motionless as the women fought over my head and producers worked to break up the melee. However, the cameramen never lost sight of their target: the fight. They captured every moment, from every angle. The footage was the guarantee the producers needed to bait their audience during teasers for the premiere of Basketball Wives LA. As the women pulled out pieces of weave, called each other names, tore each other’s clothing, and struck each other in the face, the producers struck ratings gold—and they knew it.

Tanya Young Williams, Jayson Williams’ Estranged Wife, On ‘Basketball Wives,’ Domestic Violence

Living with a professional athlete isn’t always as glamorous as society makes it out to be, according to “Basketball Wives” star Tanya Young Williams. Since experiencing a whirlwind of legal drama stemming from her husband’s, Jayson Williams, involvement in the fatal 2002 shooting of a limo driver in their New Jersey home, has forced her to become a single parent during his incarceration. Now the inspirational speaker, legal correspondent and author is eager to use her position in the limelight of VH1′s “Basketball Wives L.A.” to voice her views on celebrity troubles and domestic violence.

In an exclusive interview with The Huffington Post, the National Domestic Violence Hotline spokeswoman opens up about her isolated role on the new show, her abusive past with Jayson Williams and the idea of starring alongside the baller in a possible reality show.

Can you talk about your role on “Basketball Wives”?

When I was approached by the producers of Shed Media, they talked about this being a show a bit like “[Basketball Wives] Miami,” where most of the women would have a relationship or be married to an NBA player. But they also wanted to focus on the high life of Hollywood and spend a little more time on who we are as women, outside of being the significant other of a high-profile player. So I was really intrigued that they wanted to present a balanced show, because I thought that was something the audience was missing in “Miami” and was really going to get the opportunity to see with the L.A. cast.

Jayson Williams‘ estranged wife, Tanya, has joined the cast of VH1′s “Basketball Wives: LA” and says she’s so far shot three episodes while navigating divorce proceedings. “I signed on to participate in the show to elevate the negative perception . . . that [it] is purposely filled with flighty, overly emotional and sense lessly dramatic women,” she told us via e-mail. “Yes, my life is chaotic, dramatic and surreal, but I am also a businesswoman.” Former Nets star Williams is behind bars for assault in the death of a limo driver and is up for parole next month when the show premieres.
