THE FIGHT, CHARGE AND ARREST OF APRIL 23, 2012
What actually prompted the now infamous domestic violence travesty at the home of Deion and Pilar Sanders on April 23, 2012 is replete with “he said” “she said” drama. What is not in dispute is that Deion had his 10 year old son for four days and his mother, brother nor sister had seen him. What is not in dispute is that Pilar was attempting to see her son when all hell broke lose. What is also not in dispute is that Pilar Sanders, the mother of three young children, was arrested on April 23, 2012 for misdemeanor domestic violence against her husband, Deion Sanders although she suffered visible injuries.
Dr. Lisa Cheryl Thomas, a renowned pianist, who has been teaching the Sanders children piano for nine years. She was at the Sanders home to give a lesson to the eldest child. Dr. Thomas testified during a protective order hearing on May 4, 2012 that she heard a loud scream from Pilar in the area of the master bedroom. She said the boy immediately became visibly upset and told her this wasn’t a good day for lessons. Thomas said she heard glass breaking and commotion in the hallway. “Deion was screaming over and over ‘Get out of my house! Get out of my house!’ ” she testified. Dr. Thomas didn’t see either Deion or Pilar in the house while she was at door with the boy. “I just kept standing there, and he kept begging me to go,” she testified. While sitting in her car deciding what actions to take, the Prosper County police arrived in response to the 911 call they received from inside the house (testimony from police indicate that there were eight calls that day to 911 from the Sanders home, most were hangups and Deion’s voice could be heard on two calls). Dr. Thomas said she called police the next day when she learned Pilar Sanders had been arrested. “I said you should not have arrested her,” Thomas said. She said she told the officer what she saw but they had yet to take her sworn statement.
Deion has given numerous interviews and testified during the protective order hearing that he was the victim in the fight and Pilar was the aggressor. He testified that he only touched her to restrain her and defend himself. Not surprisingly however, Pilar has a very different version of events. Although she has testified in court, this interview is the first time that she has given details of what she alleges transpired in her home on April 23, 2012.
Q: Please describe the violence that took place in your home on April 23, 2012.
A: “After Deion closed the door so I couldn’t see or talk to my son, he then opened it and jumped towards me in a taunting, frightening manner. I said, ‘what are you going to do?’ And he closes the door and I see him pushing (my son) into the closet area and closes that door. I cant see my son anymore and then he shuts the door on me. I call him a bitch. Then the door opens and he charges me like he’s running out of a tunnel on the football field – straight to my throat – completely off guard – drives and slams me into the glass double door by my neck. I’m kicking and scratching any where that I can get him off of my throat. I put my hand under his fingertips and I’m able to wiggle out of his choke. He picks me back up by my neck and throws me around … I’m screaming at the top of my lungs and now he’s rushing me into the bedroom – off of my feet – solely by my neck. He pulled me around the sitting area, I can’t breathe anymore … I grab the elbow of the statue with one arm and try to grab the double doors while he still has me. It’s very heavy, and I’m tipping it. With whatever bit of breathe and strength I have, I’m giving it all I got because I don’t have many more ‘gots’ left. He grabs the statue. I look at him like ‘you gotta be kidding me’ and I just cover my head and close my eyes and boom, boom, boom. He’s just hitting me with the statue and with his hands. He wasn’t doing a Superfly Snuka (the famous wrestler) over my head with the statue, he was just tipping, tipping it on my head … He lies and says he didn’t hit me or choke me and this is why I’m sitting here with a broken arm and a smashed thumb with a pin in it.”
Q: How are your children dealing with the constant drama in the house?
A: Its very unnecessary drama. I’m sure it’s very confusing because they have been attached to me like glue. They are one of my extensions. Then all of a sudden in March you are getting all of this attention from a man that you always wanted attention from and now he is giving it to you but they don’t quite understand because at the same time he is throwing their momma under the bus. He is really nasty. I don’t know another word to describe him that will surpass “nasty”.
Pilar is also suing Deion for slander and assault. The assault stems from him allegedly instructing his aunt, whom Pilar states was ordered by the court to stay away from her home, to go to the house. The undisputed end result is that two grown women had a violent, physical altercation in the family home. “She played the recording the next day and thought it was so funny. Then he took her on (radio shows) and introduced her to all these radio stations as a fifty year old woman who beat up your wife”. He tried to get me thrown in jail that night. They cuffed me and had me sitting in the front of the cop car in front of my house for two hours. But because I had the entire incident on 911, they had to let me go.”
Q: Where do you see yourself in the immediate future and five years down the road?
A: I have businesses and I’ve been working for a minute. I have a perfume line and a T-Shirt line and some savings but I’ve been using everything since September when he cut us off, and my family and some friends have helped me out. Moving forward, I want to work more in depth in TV and film for sure – acting and writing. It was something that I did before we were married. He knew that after the kids were older it was something I wanted to get back into. I have a business plan and I want it to grow with clothing, fragrances and beauty products. I want my children to see me grow an empire for them. A have a lot of fun things that I do with my daughter and my mother and my sister. Fun things that are passed down through generations – beauty and skin care secrets. Most importantly, I want to go further with my babies and their talents. They all play the piano and are musically inclined. I want them to experience great things and see the world. The divorce can’t happen soon enough for me.
Deion Sanders denies any physical abuse towards his estranged wife and is unaware of the incidents she cites. He also asserts that he has always wanted the prenuptial agreement to stand, thus he did not offer Pilar the assets, excluding the house, and custody of the children. Deion’s representatives have stressed that he loves his children equally and prides himself on being a good father.
